How to make the most of your summer break as a student.

Varsity is out and you’ve got the whole of December and most of Jan ready and waiting for you to take advantage of. There’ll be family gatherings, braais with friends, plus restaurant and bar hopping. But what else can you do that’s maybe a little different to make your break memorable? Here are a few ideas to make the most of your student summer break.

The Galileo Open-Air Cinema

Spend a warm summer night under the stars watching Galileo’s December movie line-up with family or friends. From Christmas favourites to cult classics, the choice is yours at multiple venues across Cape Town. You can enjoy a pre-movie picnic or snack on popcorn and some vino from one of their many food and beverage vendors.

DIY cocktail making

Gather a crowd and enjoy a DIY cocktail-making experience to remember. Pick a cocktail box from Cocktail Culture and have it delivered straight to your door. Choose from delicious boozy boxes including the Aperol Spritzmas (on point for the holiday season), the Espresso Martini and Mojito kit, or even the classic Old Fashioned – there’s a cocktail for every palette. You can even book an online course and learn to become a cocktail-making fiend.

Kirstenbosch Summer Sunset Concerts

All you need is a picnic blanket, your favourite bottle of something and a few mates to enjoy the lineups at Kirstenbosch this December and January. Book your tickets online and make sure you don’t miss out. Jeremy Loops, Congo Cowboys, Goldfish and Die Heuwels Fantasies are just some of the epic headliners coming your way.

Gingerbread house making

No one is too old to indulge in a little creativity or healthy competition. Grab a gingerbread house-making kit from Yuppiechef and get family or friends involved in making their own masterpiece. Customise with additional sweet treats and see who has the skills to be crowned Gingerbread Champion.

Maynardville Garden Market

Explore the Waterfront on a stand-up paddleboard

This is where a bit of exercise (never a bad thing over the festive season) and scenic views collide. Book your paddleboarding experience and cruise the Cape Town canals surrounding the Watefront. Take it all in from a totally new perspective. Equipment and a quick stand-up paddleboarding lesson is included.
